Choosing the Right Location for Your Equestrian Session

One of the first questions we ask every new client is: where would you like to shoot? The answer shapes everything — the mood, the light, the story the images will tell. There is no single right answer, but there are better and worse choices for different goals.
Your own property is almost always our first recommendation for portrait sessions. Your horse is relaxed in familiar surroundings, which means better behaviour and more natural expressions. Your property also tells a story — of your life, your land, your relationship with your horses. These contextual details add richness to the images that a neutral location simply cannot provide.
Showgrounds and competition venues work beautifully for action and lifestyle sessions. The infrastructure — the arenas, the stabling, the warm-up areas — creates a visual language that is immediately recognisable to the equestrian community. If you're building a portfolio for competition or brand purposes, this context is invaluable.
For purely artistic portrait work, we sometimes recommend scouting a scenic countryside location — a field of long grass, a woodland track, a river crossing. These settings strip away the equestrian context and focus entirely on the beauty of the horse as a subject. The results can be extraordinary, but they require more planning and a horse that is confident in new environments.
Whatever location you choose, we'll visit in advance to assess the light, identify the best angles, and plan the session in detail. Great location photography is never accidental — it's the result of careful preparation and a clear creative vision.
